Overview and Benefits
Oxybutynin is a drug used to treat the symptoms of overactive bladder (frequent or urgent urination, urine leakage (incontinence) and increased urination at night). The medication works by reducing the muscle spasms of the urinary tract and the bladder.
This drug may also be prescribed to treat other conditions not mentioned in this guide.
How to Use
To guarantee the safe use of Oxybutynin, let your doctor know if you have any of these conditions:
You should always use Oxybutynin with a prescription. Follow the directions on the prescription label carefully and never take a larger or smaller dose than recommended. Do not take the dose for a longer or shorter period than recommended.
Oxybutynin should be taken with a full glass of water. To achieve the best results and avoid overdosing and missing doses, take the medicine at the same time each day. You can take the medicine with or without food. Do not chew, crush or break the extended-release tablet.
For the liquid medicine, measure the recommended dose with a dose-measuring cup or spoon. Your pharmacist will provide you with the right dose measuring tool.
FDA Pregnancy Classification
Oxybutynin is not expected to cause harm to an unborn baby. However, you should let your doctor know if you are pregnant. It is unknown if Oxybutynin can pass into breast milk and cause harm to a breastfeeding baby.
Store at room temperature and away from heat and moisture.
Oxybutynin is not recommended for use by patients with uncontrolled or untreated narrow-angle glaucoma, blockage in the digestive tract or those unable to urinate. You should let your doctor know if you have liver or kidney disease, glaucoma, enlarged prostate, ulcerative colitis, myasthenia gravis, blockage in the stomach or intestines or any stomach disorder like slow digestion and GERD.
Oxybutynin can cause decreased perspiration. This increases the risk of heat stroke. Avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated in hot weather or during exercises.
Some of the side effects of Oxybutynin are blurred vision and impaired thinking and reaction. Avoid tasks that require alertness and be careful when driving.
Stop using the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you start experiencing such severe side effects as hot & dry skin, severe stomach pain, extreme thirst, pain when urinating or if you stop urinating. All new and worsening side effects should be reported to your doctor.
