Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat different types of bacterial infections. The drug can also be prescribed to treat other conditions. Before using Cefixime, it is imperative that you inform your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin or other antibiotics similar to Cefixime such as Cerftin, Keflex and Omnicef.
Cefixime will not treat viral infections (flu or common cold).
How to Use
To ensure the safe use of Cefixime, give your doctor a list of the drugs you are allergic to. Patients who suffer from diabetes should also inform their doctor before a prescription is given. The Cefixime suspension contains sucrose which might cause problems to diabetic patients.
You should always use Cefixime with a prescription. Follow the instructions on the prescription label keenly. Do not take a smaller or larger dose than recommended. Cefixime works best when taken with a meal or 30 minutes before or after meals.
Cefixime tablets should be taken with plenty of water. For the chewable tablets, chew the tablet completely before swallowing. You should not chew, crush or break the extended-release tablet. Swallow them whole with a full glass of water.
The oral suspension should be shaken before measuring the dose. Ask the pharmacist for the right dose-measuring cup or spoon.
You should use the drug for the full prescribed period. The symptoms may clear before the dose is complete. Skipping a dose will increase the risk of further infections which might be resistant to antibiotics.
FDA Pregnancy Classification
Cefixime is not expected to cause harm to an unborn baby. However, you need to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant during treatment. It is unknown if Cefixime can pass into breast milk or if it can harm a breastfeeding baby. Let your doctor know if you are nursing a baby.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember but only if it is not almost time for the next scheduled dose. For the best results, take the dose at the same time each day.
Store the capsules and tablets at room temperature and away from light, heat and moisture.
The liquid should be refrigerate and discarded after 14 days.
Cefixime should not be taken by people allergic to drugs similar to cerfixime or cephalosporin antibiotics. Combining the two can cause serious interactions.
Cefixime may cause unusual results in urine lab tests for sugar (glucose). Let the lab technician know you are using this drug.
When taking Cefixime, avoid taking antacids an hour before or after taking the dose. Antacids can make it hard for your body to absorb Cefixime.
Diarrhea while taking Cefixime is usually a sign of a new infection. If you have bloody or watery diarrhea, contact your doctor immediately. Don’t take anti-diarrhea drugs without informing your doctor.
Cefixime has an interaction with 42 drugs. The drug also interacts with colitis, renal dysfunction and Nitroprusside tests.
